Vol. 498 No. 2

Written Answers. - Mental Handicap Services.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

205 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Health and Children if his Department is in receipt of an application from the South Eastern Health Board for funding for special units at Kilcreene Hospital, Kilkenny; and, if so, when a decision on the project will be made. [26947/98]

The development mentioned by the Deputy is one of a number of initiatives which the South Eastern Health Board has proposed as part of the board's programme to transfer persons with a mental handicap from psychiatric hospitals to more appropriate care settings. While initial discussions have taken place with the board, this issue is to be discussed in more detail in 1999 in the context of the overall national programme to transfer persons with a mental handicap who have been identified as requiring an alternative placement.
