Vol. 498 No. 2

Written Answers. - Mountjoy Prison.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

239 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the agreement reached between his Department and local residents in relation to traffic movements arising from the new buildings at Mountjoy Prison; and the reason some of these commitments have not been kept. [27010/98]

Traffic movements in the general area of the Mountjoy Prison complex are a matter for Dublin Corporation and the Garda.

In relation to my prisons building programme at Mountjoy, the only building which has been brought into use is the new carpark on St. Patrick's Avenue which is fully utilised. Some months ago, the Governor of St. Patrick's Institution issued an order to all staff to refrain from parking in the area of Blacquire Villas and the library.

Construction work on the new women's prison and Mountjoy Stores is nearing completion and therefore some increase in traffic can be expected this month as an all out effort is made to complete construction before Christmas.

I promised the local residents that general security around the outside perimeter of the completed Mountjoy Prison complex would be improved when construction work is completed and it is my intention to honour that commitment as soon as possible in the new year.
