Vol. 498 No. 2

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Equipment.

John Gormley

Ceist:

56 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself that the Defence Forces are adequately served by a fully integrated strategic information system linking all defence locations, including those assigned to international peace keeping operations, in order to ensure the most effective and efficient delivery of administrative and management services. [23388/98]

John Browne

Ceist:

85 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Defence the expenditure increase proposed in the Defence Estimates for 1999 under subhead N for communications and information technology; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26707/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 56 and 85 together.

I am advised by the military authorities that the Defence Forces have an integrated voice and data network in place linking all the principal defence locations, including the permanently occupied barracks, the UNIFIL battalion in the Lebanon, and the unit with SFOR. This integrated network supports the delivery of effective and efficient administrative services.

No increase is proposed for 1999 in the subhead dealing with communications and information technology. I am advised that the military authorities consider the provision for 1999 adequate to meet requirements arising.
