Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Vermin Infestation.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

440 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to a letter from the chairman of the board of management of Charleville national school, Tullamore, County Offaly, regarding an infestation of vermin in the school; his views on whether this is a matter of great concern to students, parents, teachers and members of the board of management; his further views on whether this problem adds great weight to the case which the board of management has made to his Department for funding for a new school; if he will expedite its application for funding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27661/98]

The management of Charleville national school, Tullamore has alerted my Department to reports of vermin in the school. The building unit of my Department has been working closely with the school to identify a solution to the present accommodation difficulties and it has been mutually agreed that a new school on a new site is the preferred option. The architectural suitability of a proposed site is currently being explored and my Department is liaising with the school and planning authority in this regard. The school management is aware of the position and is satisfied with the progress being made.
