Vol. 498 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

218 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the decision, if any, he has made on the building of a new classroom at Carrowkennedy national school, Westport, County Mayo, in view of the fact that children have to be taught in the nearby community centre as a result of overcrowding; if funding is available for this construction project in 1999; when this construction work will commence; and the plans, if any, he has to reduce the local contribution rate in view of the fact the school is in a disadvantaged area. [28098/98]

My Department has commenced architectural planning for the construction of an additional classroom at Carrowkennedy national school, Westport, County Mayo. At this early stage in the planning process, it is not possible to give a realistic timescale for the commencement of construction. The question of funding the proposed extension will be addressed when all the planning work has been completed. The level of local contribution is standardised and is determined by the designated status of the school.
