A proposal for a branch library at Castleisland, County Kerry, was received in my Department in December 1995. This was not advanced due to the large number of proposals on hands and the limited funding available at that time. However, the capital allocation for library improvements has been increased from £2.76 million in 1998 to £7.2 million this year. Against this background, I intend to write to local authorities in the near future requesting them to update and, where appropriate, prioritise all their library proposals.
All library proposals on hands, including the Castleisland proposal, will be reassessed in the light of the responses from library atuhorities and the increased funding available.
