Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - Probation and Welfare Service.

John Bruton

Ceist:

783 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will give consideration to a proposal sent to him by a person (details supplied) in County Cavan to provide a halfway house for ex-offenders (details supplied); and the reason he has not responded to correspondence sent to him on this subject. [28320/98]

The probation and welfare service of my Department has looked at the proposal and while acknowledging the work of the organisation in question in providing a service to some persons, it does not present as a realistic option for ex-offenders bearing in mind resources involved. In the circumstances it is not possible to assist this project at this time, due to the existing demands of the resouces of the service.

I wish to inform the Deputy that a reply issued on the 31 December, 1998 to correspondence on behalf of a person, referred to in this question, regarding a proposal to provide a half-way house for ex-prisoners.
