Ceist:

165 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will make funding available in order to enable the hall for Youghal project in Youghal, County Cork, to go ahead in the near future; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a substantial local contribution is available; if so, the amount in this regard; his views on whether this amount is adequate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2373/99]

As a result of applications for additional accommodation received from Coláiste Eoin and CBS, Youghal, my Department originally proposed to plan extensions at both schools. Schedules of accommodation were agreed for the extensions and provision was made for a shared sports hall. The design team for the CBS project was requested to prepare a feasibility study outlining the full extent of the refurbishment works required before initiating architectural planning of the extension. Due to the extent of the refurbishment works required at the CBS and the cost of extending both schools, the issue of rationalisation was raised. In this regard, officials from the planning and building unit of my Department recently met with the trustees of the secondary schools and the VEC. A response in relation to the feasibility of rationalisation is awaited.
