Vol. 499 No. 2

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

27 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his Department will provide finance for the staffing and operation of the Drogheda sewage treatment plant; if this plant will have to treat waste material from Drogheda, County Louth and County Meath when it is completed; his views on whether it would not be reasonable and fair that the total cost would be borne by the rate payers of Drogheda; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1459/99]

The provision of funding for the staffing, operation and maintenance of a sewage treatment plant is a matter for the local authority concerned, in this case, Drogheda Corporation. The Drogheda waste water treatment facility, which is expected to be operational by June 2000, is designed to treat waste water from Drogheda and areas of Counties Louth and Meath. The plant may also process sludge generated at other treatment plants. It is a matter for the Corporation to decide what charges should be levied on adjoining local authorities in return for providing these services.
