Vol. 499 No. 3

Written Answers - Fisheries Boards.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

139 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans, if any, he has to integrate the operations of the three fishery boards who have responsibility for County Cavan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2688/99]

The boundaries of the seven fisheries regions, and the resultant areas of responsibility of the seven regional fisheries boards, were established by reference to the waters, river catchments and river systems deemed most appropriate to be managed on an integral basis. As is the case in County Cavan, fisheries regions of necessity often cross county lines as a result of the river systems catchment based approach. The strategic approach is to ensure effective and efficient co-operation and co-ordination between regional fisheries boards having complementary responsibilities within counties, on conservation, protection and development strategies for fisheries in a given area. In light of the Deputy's concern I am requesting the central fisheries board to pursue with the three regional fisheries boards concerned the scope if any to enhance existing co-operation in the County Cavan area.
