Vol. 500 No. 3

Written Answers. - Aquaculture Licences.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

31 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the acquaculture licences which he has issued under the Fisheries Amendment Act, 1997; the number of these, if any, appealed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3811/99]

To date, one ten year aquaculture licence and two three year trial licences have been granted under the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1997. The aquaculture licence was granted to Blue Springs Limited for the culture of ornamental tropical fish at Kiltybrannock, Cloonloo, Boyle, County Roscommon. There was no appeal against the decision to grant the licence which was published in the Roscommon Herald on 30 December 1998. The two trial licences were granted to Dunmanus Bay Sea Urchin Growers Society Limited for the culture of sea urchins on sites in Bantry Bay and in Dunmanus Bay, County Cork. The Act provides that, on grounds of their experimental nature and limited duration, these licences are not appealable.
