While it may not be possible for the Taoiseach to raise the issue of Germany's position on Sellafield with Chancellor Schröder at the informal meeting of Heads of State and Government to be held in Bonn on 26 February next to discuss Agenda 2000, he hopes to have another opportunity to do so in the coming months.
The Department of Foreign Affairs continues to monitor developments in Germany in the light of the new German Government's policy that the country's nuclear power supply should be gradually reduced and replaced. On 27 January last, the German Government decided to delay the approval of legislation to amend the nuclear energy law to enable further discussion with the nuclear energy industry. I understand that the German Government is also examining the legal conditions for terminating the forwarding of spent fuel for reprocessing in the UK and France.
