Vol. 500 No. 7

Written Answers. - Charitable Bodies.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

354 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has satisfied himself that there is adequate and appropriate co-ordination between the Departments of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Finance and Enterprise, Trade and Employment to provide for charitable bodies operating an environment coherent and conducive to the development of models of best practice in relation to legislation, regulatory provision and administration; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4780/99]

I assume the Deputy is referring to the plans the Government has to regulate fundraising for charitable and other purposes. I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 101 of 11 February 1999 in which I indicated that the introduction of legislation to reform the law relating to the administration and regulation of charities is a priority item in the work programme for my Department and that work on the heads of a Bill will be advanced as quickly as possible in the light of the disposal of other legislative priorities. I have nothing further to add to that reply other than to say that the scope of new legislation will take account of models of best practice in this area.
