Vol. 501 No. 2

Written Answers. - Building Societies Act.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

283 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when he will introduce an amendment to the Building Societies Act, 1987, to allow both account holders on a joint account benefit from any share transfer and so on; and if this amendment will be back dated. [5514/99]

I would refer the Deputy to the response by Minister of State Wallace to the Private Member's Bill on this matter on 15 December 1998. Any proposals for legislative change in this area would have to be considered in the context of implications not only for the building society code but also for other codes such as company, insurance, banking and credit union law. In view of this, my Department has raised the question of a possible legislative response with the Departments of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and Finance, and has also sought the views of the Central Bank which is the regulatory authority for building societies.
