330 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the needs of primary school students in south Offaly and adjoining areas of north Tipperary for the provision of a special speech and language unit in Birr, County Offaly; the consideration, if any, his Department has given to the provision of this unit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The issue raised by the Deputy is the subject of ongoing discussions between officials of my Department and the Midland Health Board. I understand that assessments of children in the area are currently taking place.

When the results of these assessments become available, my Department will be in a position to determine whether the establishment of a special unit is the most appropriate response to the needs of the children in question.
