Vol. 502 No. 1

Written Answers. - Prisoner Releases.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

96 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to suspend paramilitary prisoner releases in response to the continuing punishment attacks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2515/99]

I condemn all so-called punishment attacks. Such activities are outside the bounds of acceptable behaviour and take a severe toll on the victims and on society. They do not provide a solution to any problems; on the contrary, they exacerbate them. I welcome recent indications that those responsible for such attacks are taking heed of the widespread condemnation of their activities.

The Good Friday Agreement was approved by a clear majority of the people of both parts of Ireland, and the Government is committed to the implementation of all its provisions. The provisions regarding prisoners are clear, and any suspension of the release of prisoners qualifying for release under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement would be a breach of the terms of the Agreement. Consequently, the Government has no plans to suspend such releases.
