Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

526 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the criteria employed to define a recorded crime for the purposes of the Garda crime statistics; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7900/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that all crimes reported to the Garda and subsequently recorded by them form the basis of the Garda crime statistics.

I understand that recorded crime consists of breaches of the criminal law which were reported to the Garda by members of the public, or which were discovered by the Garda. The records of these crimes form the basis of all Garda crime statistics. There has been no change in the criteria employed.

Ceist:

527 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the latest detection rate in each of the Garda divisional areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7901/99]

Crime statistics are published in the annual reports of An Garda Síochána, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. The reports contain information on a national, regional and divisional basis. The most recent annual report details the crime statistics for 1997.

The annual report for 1998 will be published later this year. The following table shows provisional statistics in relation to detection rates for each division in 1998.
