Vol. 502 No. 6

Written Answers. - Maintenance Grants.

John Browne

Ceist:

333 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Education and Science if full post leaving certificate grant entitlements will be reconsidered for a person (details supplied) in County Wexford who is attending Gorey community school and was refused this grant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9087/99]

The student in question has been awarded the full adjacent rate of maintenance grant under the European Social Fund aided maintenance grant scheme for students attending post leaving certificate courses in respect of her attendance at a PLC course in Gorey community school.

Under the terms of the scheme, the adjacent rate of maintenance grant is payable in the case of a grantholder whose normal residence is 15 miles or less from the PLC centre which she or he is attending. The non-adjacent rate of grant may be paid in all other cases.

As the PLC centre is less than 15 miles from the student's normal residence, she can only qualify for the adjacent rate of grant. There is no provision in the scheme for payment of the non-adjacent rate in exceptional circumstances such as those outlined in this case.
