Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - Domiciliary Care Allowance.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

334 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children if a family (details supplied) in Dublin 10 are entitled to any other allowances in respect of a child who has Down's syndrome condition; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9634/99]

The family referred to by the Deputy is currently in receipt of the domiciliary care allowance in respect of the child in question. This allowance is a monthly allowance paid by the health boards in respect of children between the ages of two and sixteen who are so severely physically disabled or mentally handicapped that they require care and attention which is considerably in excess of that normally required by a child of the same age.

In relation to the provision of services, I understand from the Eastern Health Board that the child in question is attending a special school and has been identified as requiring respite services in the future.

I understand that the Deputy has also put this question to my colleague, the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs, who has responsibility for various other family support allowances.
