Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department is carrying out a national inventory of architectural heritage on a systematic basis. One of the purposes of the inventory is to provide advice to planning authorities on the architectural heritage to assist them in protecting that heritage.
In carrying out the inventory in a systematic way surveys are done on an area wide basis and resources would not be deployed effectively if structures were to be surveyed individually outside the area wide approach. Nevertheless, in the case of the Navan Infirmary buildings, these structures were examined as part of the Navan town survey which will issue in draft form to the planning authority later this year. The draft survey will classify those buildings to be of regional importance which, in my opinion, would warrant that they continue to be listed and which, I understand, they already are.
I should advise, however, that the listing of the building is a matter for the planning authority and will remain so under proposed revisions to the planning Acts and the authority has and will continue to have responsibility for the protection of listed buildings.
