Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Areas of Conservation.

Seán Power

Ceist:

446 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will utilise the delay in implementing the restriction on turf cutters to ensure that alternative turbary rights are made available to them to enable them continue the traditional self sufficiency in the provision of fuel. [9729/99]

The Deputy will be aware that I have announced a compensation package for the cessation of turf cutting in proposed special areas of conservation. The various options I have put forward under this package may be availed of as and from the beginning of the current turfcutting season.

In most areas of the country where such is required, alternative sites (or swop sites) have been acquired by Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department. In many areas these sites are currently being used by turfcutters who have decided to avail of that particular option under the compensation package. Any person who wishes to avail of this option and who has not already done so, should contact the local staff of Dúchas without delay.
