Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - Probation and Welfare Service.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

488 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department has received a submission from the probation and welfare service regarding the failure of the Government to implement the main recommendations of the expert group on the probation and welfare service; his views on the submission; and the plans, if any, he has in this regard. [9967/99]

I wish to inform the Deputy that I recently met with IMPACT, the union that represents the majority of those working in the probation and welfare service to outline the current position in relation to the recommendations of the expert group and to assure them of my commitment to the service.

I informed IMPACT that I would be taking up the matter of extra staff with the Department of Finance. I am currently negotiating with the Department of Finance on this issue and I will be talking to IMPACT again.
