Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

110 Mr. Deenihan asked the Taoiseach the number of projects approved by the millennium committee to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10160/99]

The National Millennium Committee is to examine and make recommendations on projects of national significance for inclusion in the Government's millennium programme and also on a system for supporting millennium projects at a local and community level, including in areas of social disadvantage.

To date, on the recommendations of the millennium committee, the Government has approved the allocation from the millennium fund of: an amount not exceeding £1 million – 1.269 million euros – to Millennium Festivals Limited; an amount not exceeding £2 million – 2.539 million euros – to Míle Átha Cliath towards the cost of its Liffey of Lights and Liffey Boardwalk Millennium projects; and an amount not exceeding £80,000 – 101,579 euros – for the millennium book project, "Write Here! Write Now!"

The National Millennium Committee has received nearly 500 millennium project proposals, most of which are projects of a local or community nature. The Government, on the recommendation of the millennium committee, has approved the allocation of £2 million – 2.539 million euros – for local and community projects. The full details of the awards process will be announced shortly.
