The administration of the registration system for births, deaths and marriages is primarily a matter for An t-Árd-Chláraitheoir, Registrar-General, of Births, Deaths and Marriages and for local registrars who operate under his general direction. Registrars, who are permanent and pensionable employees of the health boards, are paid the salaries appropriate to their substantive clerical and administrative grades and they remit any registration fees to the health boards. Persons appointed registrars, who are not permanent and pensionable employees of the health boards, derive their incomes from fees for registrations and fees for the certificates issued by them. The fees currently payable to registrars appointed under the various Registration Acts are set out in S.I. No. 278 of 1987. These fees are under review.
