Vol. 503 No. 7

Written Answers. - Students Summer Jobs Scheme.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

116 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number of students approved and paid under the 1998 students summer jobs scheme who had been ineligible but were included on review for the scheme in view of the fact they were returning to full-time education. [11101/99]

The purpose of the students summer jobs scheme is to provide income support during the summer holiday period for less well-off third level students who are disqualified from receiving unemployment assistance and are unable to obtain summer work. Students who have completed their course of study are not eligible to participate in the scheme as such students are eligible to apply for unemployment assistance if they are unable to obtain summer work.

Of the 20,900 students who applied to participate in the 1998 scheme, 2,237 were refused on the grounds that they had completed their course of study. A very small number of those students (estimated to be less than 20) were reviewed on appeal and were allowed where evidence was produced that the course of study had not, in fact, been completed.
