90 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a number of classes in Belgrove boys' and girls' national school, Clontarf, Dublin 3, have in excess of the national recommended maximum of children per class teacher. [11222/99]
I understand that there are four separate national schools in Belgrove, Clontarf as follows: Eoin Baisde junior boys – Roll No. 19006; Eoin Baisde infants girls – Roll No. 19007; Eoin Baisde senior girls – Roll No. 17148; and Eoin Baisde senior boys – Roll No.17936.
My Department's guidelines on maximum class size for the current school year are as follows: 35 in the case of a single-grade class-group; 34 in the case of a class-group of two consecutive grades; 31 in the case of multi-grade class-group; 29 in the case of disadvantaged schools.
The existing complement of teaching staff in each of the four schools is based on the enrolment of each school on 30 September 1997. There seems to be no reason why classes in each of these schools cannot be organised in compliance with the above maximum class size guidelines.
