Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

91 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 136 of 31 March 1999, he will supply the number of students which make up the 35 per cent increase in overall student enrolment, the number of students which make the 74 per cent increase of the numbers on degree courses, the number of students which make up the 97 per cent increase in enrolment on ab initio degree courses and the number of students in these categories for each year from 1995 to date at Waterford Institute of Technology. [11223/99]

The number of students which make up the 35 per cent increase in overall student enrolment is 1240. This was calculated on the basis of an estimated enrolment figure in the report of the steering committee on the future development of higher education of 3,500 for 1994-95 and an enrolment of 4,740 for 1997-98.

According to the annual returns provided by Waterford Institute of Technology: (a) the actual numbers of wholetime students are as follows: 1994-95, 3,432; 1997-98, 4,740

The number of students which make up the 74 per cent increase of the number on degree courses is 779. (b) the actual numbers of degree students are as follows: 1994-95, 1,046; 1997-98, 1,825

The number of students which make up the 97 per cent increase in enrolment on year one of ab initio degree courses is 275. (c) the actual intake of ab initio degree students is as follows: 1994-95, 285; 1997-98, 560.
