Vol. 504 No. 2

Written Answers. - Economic Growth.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

182 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance if perpetual growth in the economy is feasible, sustainable or desirable in view of the opinion of an economist (details supplied) that the effort to overcome poverty by further growth in scale of throughput is self-defeating once the point is reached where growth in scale increases environmental costs faster than it increases production benefits; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11299/99]

The economy, in the medium term, is expected to continue with strong growth – though at somewhat reduced levels. Ireland is now closer to the average EU GNP per capita. To ensure continued progress, much investment in infrastrucutre is still needed.

The Government aims to minimise the adverse environmental impacts of economic growth, in line with national and EU policy on sustainable development. The Deputy will be aware of the various measures which the Government is taking in this regard.
