81 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the fact that repeat waiting periods apply in the case of interrupted disability benefit claims by part-time workers which do not apply in the case of full-time workers; and if he will remove this anomaly. Disability benefit is not normally paid for the first three days of illness, known as "waiting days". However, where a person who has resumed working makes a repeat claim within a further three day period, disability benefit can be paid from the first day of the subsequent illness. These rules apply equally to part-time and full-time workers.
I am not aware of any differences in the treatment of part-time workers under the "waiting day" rules. However, if the Deputy has details of any particular case where the rules are operating in such a way, perhaps he could forward details to me and I will have the matter fully examined.
