Vol. 507 No. 2

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

274 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Education and Science the basis on which a person (details supplied) in County Kerry has been refused a higher education grant. [16429/99]

To be eligible for a maintenance grant under the terms of the third level student support schemes candidates must satisfy the relevant conditions as to age, residence, means and nationality. In this regard, candidates must hold EU nationality, have official refugee status or have been granted humanitarian leave to remain in the State.

While the candidate in question has been granted leave to remain in the State as the spouse of an Irish citizen, he does not meet the above mentioned criteria and accordingly, he is ineligible for grant assistance.
