Vol. 507 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

275 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education and Science when a remedial teacher will be appointed to Tankerstown national school, Cahir, County Tipperary; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16496/99]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that the school in question is being included in the remedial teaching service with effect from September next.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

276 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education and Science the national schools which have the service of a remedial teacher in south Tipperary; when the appointments were made; the schools that do not have a remedial teacher; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16497/99]

As of September next, all national schools with a pupil teacher ratio of 10:1 or more, including schools in south Tipperary, will have access to a remedial teacher service.

Schools with a pupil teacher ratio below 10:1 are entitled to make application to my Department for a remedial service where the needs of pupils warrant such a service.

Information regarding the appointment date of each remedial teacher in South Tipperary is not readily available in my Department.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

277 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 218 of 22 June 1999, St Mary's primary school, Dungarvan, County Waterford, will be granted a home/school/community liaison teacher or an additional resource teacher; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16498/99]

My immediate priority at present is to extend the home/school/community liaison service to all first and second level schools which have been designated as disadvantaged and which currently do not have access to the liaison service.

Arrangements to put this extension of service in place from September next are currently being made in my Department. As the school in question does not have disadvantaged status, it will not be included in this extension. However, I can assure the Deputy that the needs of the school to which he refers will be fully considered in the event of any further expansion of the home/school/community liaison scheme being undertaken.

My Department's inspectorate is currently examining the school's application for a resource teacher and a decision will be made on this matter in the near future.
