Ahern asked the Minister for Defence his views on the lack of promotional opportunities in the Defence Forces; if recent early retirements have had a negative impact on these promotions; if there is a large backlog of qualified applicants for corporal positions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The military authorities advise that promotional opportunities are available to all suitably qualified personnel at present.
Recent early retirements have had no negative impact on promotional opportunities. The military authorities advise that there is no backlog of qualified applicants for Corporal appointments. Any outstanding appointments were filled in June.
