Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fisheries Protection.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

175 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the report (details supplied) which shows that farmed salmon lice may have a detrimental effect on wild sea trout in areas with salmon farming activity and refers to the non-toxic biological control of sea lice using cleaner fish which feed on the sea lice attached to farmed fish examples of which are in Goldsinney (Ireland) (details supplied) or in Ballan Wrasse (Norway); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17284/99]

I have requested the Marine Institute to evaluate the analysis and findings of the Norwegian research paper to which the Deputy refers in light of our own comprehensive national sea lice research monitoring and management programmes and sea trout conservation and rehabilitation strategies which have been ongoing since 1990. I will communicate further with the Deputy when I have received the institute's evaluation.
