Ceist:

867 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Education and Science the number and name of primary schools in north Kerry which have applied for resource teachers and special needs assistants; and if he will give details of the number of appointments which have been sanctioned as of 1 September 1999. My Department received applications for resource teacher and/or special needs assistant support from the following 46 primary schools in County Kerry.

To date, my Department has sanctioned a total of four full-time resource teaching posts which cater for 17 schools and part-time resource teaching hours in another four schools in County Kerry. A total of 23 full-time and one part-time special needs assistant posts have been sanctioned for County Kerry as of 1 September 1999.

The Deputy will realise that this represents a major advance on previous provision and I can assure him that applications are being processed as speedily as possible within available manpower resources and consistent with ensuring that each child's application receives appropriate expert attention.
