Vol. 508 No. 3

Written Answers - Housing Provision for the Elderly.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

298 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to recommend that all individual housing authorities which provide senior citizen dwellings must adhere to the model plans in a booklet containing guidelines on the provision of housing for elderly people as circulated by his Department and that funding will be conditional on this separate bedroom provision; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19017/99]

The type of accommodation to be provided in senior citizens dwellings is a matter for the individual housing authorities in the first instance having regard to their housing needs. The model plans circulated by my Department to housing authorities provide for separate bedrooms and living areas in all instances and it is my understanding that housing authorities generally do not provide bedsit type dwellings for senior citizens. However, a local authority might, in particular circumstances, consider that bedsit accommodation was warranted. It would not be appropriate to refuse funding in such cases.
