Nora Owen

Ceist:

108 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Health and Children the current state of preparedness of his Department and any agencies attached to his Department with regard to year 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21901/99]

Within my Department action has been taken to identify the year 2000 compliance status of systems and equipment and where relevant, the necessary steps have been taken to ensure compliance. At this time the Department has drafted a contingency plan and this is in an advanced state of implementation. Given the nature of such plans my Department will maintain an ongoing review of the plan.

My Department has been actively engaged co-ordinating and facilitating the work of health agencies who have teams in place to ensure that the health services will be year 2000 ready. Reports to my Department indicate that the great bulk of the work has been completed. Agencies are in the process of completing contingency-business continuity plans and indications are that these are progressing well.

I am confident that my Department's policy which is to ensure that health service clients and staff should be protected from potential risks to health and safety arising from the millennium changeover and that there should be minimal dis ruption to normal health services, will be achieved.
