Ceist:147 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding provision of second level educational facilities at Newport, County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21967/99]
Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.
The Deputy will be aware that in June 1998 I approved the provision of a post-primary school in Newport, County Mayo. The school will be under the authority of Mayo Vocational Education Committee.
It was intended the school would open in September 1999. However, I understand that due to difficulties in securing a suitable site, the commencement of the school was delayed.
Officials from my Department are involved in ongoing consultation with the vocational education committee regarding the acquisition of a suitable site, which has been identified. The chief executive officer is currently negotiating the purchase of this site.
A meeting is being arranged between the chief executive officer and my officials to discuss the time scale for the delivery of the school.
