Vol. 510 No. 1

Written Answers. - Telecommunications Services.

Michael Finucane

Ceist:

29 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the plans, if any, she has to review any aspect of the legislation relating to the Office of the Director of Telecommunications Regulation with particular reference to the representations and appeal procedures. [20833/99]

The question of appeals against decisions made by the Director of Telecommunications Regulation is one of a number of issues relating to the effectiveness of the telecommunications regulatory framework which my Department is currently examining. This work follows an announcement which I made last April of my intention to have legislative proposals prepared to provide the director with a firm basis for the regulation of the sector well into the next millennium. It is my intention to bring the necessary legislative proposals before Government as soon as practicable.

The issue of appeals against the decisions of sector-specific regulators also comes within the scope of the consultative process on regulation which I have recently initiated. That process is intended to lead to a discussion document which will address a range of issues relevant to the current and future regulatory environment in Ireland.
