Vol. 510 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

36 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to any difficulties for commuters travelling southbound on the DART from the northside stations, particularly Raheny, Harmonstown, Killester and Clontarf from 7.45 a.m. to 8.45 a.m; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21192/99]

I am aware of the difficulties faced by commuters at the stations in question and elsewhere on the network. While Iarnród Éireann has taken some steps to increase capacity by increasing the amount of standing room available, the remedy lies in additional rolling stock and longer trains.

As the Deputy is aware, 26 additional carriages are already on order and the first ten are expected to be delivered this month. There will then be a two month period while the rolling stock is tested and commissioned before entry into service. While this must be frustrating for commuters, it is an unavoidable step in ensuring that the carriages function to specification and that their subsequent operation meet safety criteria. The remaining 16 carriages are due to be delivered this time next year.

The DTO Blueprint 2000-2006 recommends the phased purchase of a further 46 carriages together with platform extensions. These measures would enable the operation of eight car DART trains in place of the existing six car or four car trains. The DTO recommendations are currently being considered as part of the preparatory work for the national development plan.
