Vol. 510 No. 3

Written Answers. - Security Matters.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

138 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has to maintain an Army presence in Leinster House notwithstanding restructuring of the Army; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22211/99]

As I indicated in reply to a similar question on 25 February 1999, I do not consider that operational security matters can appropriately be addressed in the House. The disestablishment of the military police company at Government Buildings was proposed in the Defence Force Review Implementation Plan 1996-98. The Government decided, however, that the proposal be referred to the interdepartmental national security group for further consideration. The matter is currently being considered in the context of a review of security at Government Buildings being conducted by the Garda Síochána which, I understand, is nearing completion.
