Vol. 510 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

363 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to upgrade Garda stations in the Inishowen region to replace condemned buildings, expand currently undersized premises and provide facilities for both gender of garda now stationed in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22298/99]

Eight Garda stations are encompassed within the lnishowen region, namely, Muff, Moville, Malin, Clonmany, Buncrana, Cuidaff, Carndonagh and Burnfoot Garda stations.

I am pleased to confirm that a new basic unit-type Garda station is planned for Muff. However, progress in relation to same is dependent upon overall priorities within the Garda building programme and the availability of financial resources.

With respect to Clonmany Garda station, refurbishment works were recently completed to the building, including new roofing and internal and external painting. Moreover, major refurbishment works to Burnfoot Garda station have been sanctioned and will proceed in due course.

In relation to Malin and Buncrana Garda stations, the Office of Public Works has been requested to examine these with a view to determining the desired works, if any, required to these structures.

With regard to Moville, Cuidaff and Carndonagh Garda stations, I am informed by the Garda authorities that they have no requests on hand for work at these locations.

Finally, I am committed to ensuring that all Garda stations have adequate accommodation facilities for both genders, and these are provided as a matter of priority as resources allow.
