Vol. 510 No. 3

Written Answers. - Immigration Controls.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

362 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the controls, if any, in place to check the movement of people from the United Kingdom through airports and ferry ports; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22297/99]

Arising from growing evidence that the common travel area was being abused by persons who were not entitled to avail of it, an amendment was made to the aliens orders in June 1997 which gave immigration officers the power to carry out checks on persons arriving in the State from the UK and to refuse such persons leave to land on the same grounds as apply to persons arriving from outside the common travel area. These checks are carried out selectively, in contrast to those on persons coming from outside the common travel area who are obliged to apply to an immigration officer for leave to land.
