Vol. 510 No. 3

Written Answers. - Live Exports.

Donal Moynihan

Ceist:

63 Mr. D. Moynihan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of live cattle exported for each of the years from 1997 to date; the number of approved boats for the transport of live cattle over this period; the countries to which the cattle were exported; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20339/99]

Exports of live cattle for the years referred to were as follows: 59,341 in 1997, 177,321 in 1998 and 337,265 up to 24 October 1999. I am circulating a table in the Official Report which provides details of destinations for these cattle.

Since 1996, 17 dedicated vessels have been approved for the transport of live animals. In addition, three roll-on/roll-off vessels were approved for the carriage of livestock at various stages in these years. These figures confirm a dramatic increase in the numbers of cattle exported between 1997 and 1999.
