Vol. 510 No. 3

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

105 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if a work permit will issue to a person (details supplied) in view of the fact she is marrying an Irish citizen; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22151/99]

An application for a work permit on behalf of the individual concerned was received by my Department on 5 August and refused on 27 August 1999 because the individual concerned was then in this country on a short-term student authorisation under which she was obliged to return to her country of origin when it expired. This precluded the issuing of a long-term work permit on her behalf at that point.

I would, however, point out that under arrangements recently agreed between my Department and the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, non-nationals who have been given permission to remain in this country by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform because they are married to Irish nationals, no longer require to hold work permits to work in this country. Given the circumstances, the person concerned may wish to pursue this avenue with the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
