Vol. 511 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

393 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint an additional remedial teacher to St. Declan's community college, Kilmacthomas, County Waterford, to enable it to provide a more comprehensive service in view of the fact that it presently has one remedial teacher for 700 students; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25152/99]

The Deputy will be aware that I provided for the allocation of an additional 225 teachers to second level schools this year. This, together with the retention of some 130 teachers who would otherwise have been redeployed, is enabling us to provide a remedial teaching service in every second level school.

The allocation to an individual school in respect of remedial is determined by the enrolment in the school.

The enrolment in the school to which the Deputy refers warrants the allocation of a full remedial post and provision has been made for this in the overall teacher allocation for the VEC scheme concerned. Further allocations will be made in the context of financial parameters and a review of provision.
