Vol. 513 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prisons Building Programme.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

110 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the compensation, if any, his Department has sought from contractors involved in the construction of Clover Hill prison and the new women's prison in Mountjoy as a result of the construction problems which delayed the opening of the two prisons; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2518/00]

To date, my Department has not sought any compensation from the contractors involved in the construction of Cloverhill Prison and the new women's prison. ln both cases, the contract was between the Office of Public Works and the contractors. Discussions, however, are ongoing between prison service officials, the Office of Public Works and the contractors concerned with a view to the earliest possible rectification of all outstanding problems.

For the information of the Deputy, I should state that the new women's prison is fully operational and additional prisoners are continuously being assigned to Cloverhill as outstanding electrical and other operational issues are resolved.
