Vol. 513 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fishing Industry Development.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

183 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the funding, if any, available under PESCA on a cross-Border basis for the development of multi-purpose boats; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3223/00]

The PESCA community initiative 1994 to 1999 provided support to coastal and island communities to diversify from traditional fishing activities into alternative activities. Under the new round of Structural Funds, the objectives of the PESCA community initiative will be continued within the mainstream programme for fisheries development.

The National Development Plan 2000-2006 provides for investment support of £171 million to develop and underpin a sustainable competitive and quality driven seafood industry. Some £45 million will be provided to enhance the safety, quality and efficiency of the fishing fleet, maintaining capacity in balance with available resources, maximising the value generated by the catching sector. It will also support strategies for diversification, innovation and development of the inshore fishing sector and coastal communities. These will be the subject of detailed negotiations with the Commission in the coming months.

Opportunities will also be available for the seafood sector under the new PEACE and INTERREG programmes which will facilitate cross-Border projects such as those referred to by the Deputy.
