Vol. 514 No. 3

Written Answers. - Education Schemes.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

328 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the primary and secondary schools in Dublin (a) designated as disadvantaged and (b) included in breaking the cycle, the early start and the teacher counsellor schemes; and when he will commence classifying Dublin schools in the proposed four grades of disadvantage. [4251/00]

I will arrange to forward to the Deputy the details he requests in relation to schools in Dublin which have been designated as disadvantaged and schools which are included in the other schemes he mentions.

Under the New Deal – A Plan for Educational Opportunity it is intended that all primary schools, including those in the Dublin area, will be surveyed to identify the precise distribution of disadvantaged pupils across the system. My Department is currently finalising arrangements for this survey, which will be carried out during the current school term.

In response to the levels of disadvantage identified through the survey, additional supports will be made available to schools to meet the needs of their pupils. The level and nature of the support services made available will vary depending on the level of need identified.
