Vol. 516 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cycling Promotion.

Ceist:

146 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the steps, if any, his Department has taken to encourage members of staff to cycle to work; and if he will consider a cycling allowance to promote cycling. [8625/00]

A number of steps have already been taken by my Department in an effort to encourage members of staff to cycle to work. A secure lock up area has been made available for bicycles and shower facilities have been installed for staff use.

The matter of a cycling allowance cannot be considered by my Department in isolation. Provision of such an incentive, in addition to infrastructural facilities, such as cycleways, is a matter to be addressed in the context of national or Dublin urban traffic management policy which is not a matter for my Department.
