Vol. 516 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mozambique Crisis.

Derek McDowell

Ceist:

15 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to concerns expressed by some relief organisations at the practice of charging landing fees for consignments of humanitarian aid at some airports in Mozambique; if he has raised this matter with the Mozambique authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8467/00]

Although in the early part of the Mozambique flood crisis, some relief organisations were charged landing fees, we have been informed by the United Nations head of joint logistics centre co-ordinating office within the Mozambiquan Government that last week a decision was taken that all flights which are co-ordinated through the National Institute for the Control of Calamities are exempt from all landing and parking fees.

The only costs which can now arise are where aircraft require the use of local commercial services for offloading.

The UN head of joint logistics team has expressed his willingness to support any agency in claiming reimbursement for the fees paid by that agency prior to last week's decision.
